Dr. Devesh Bahety

Scientist, educator, and founder of BioChemLabs

Devesh is a biomedical researcher with a passion for making science accessible, engaging, and relevant to everyday life.

He earned his PhD in Biomedicine from the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona, where he investigated how dormant egg cells sustain their metabolism over remarkably long periods. His scientific background spans chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, and metabolism.

But his passion for science education began long before his research career. Through years of tutoring and science outreach, he discovered the power of games and hands-on activities to make complex scientific ideas easier to understand.

He founded BioChemLabs to bring together his experience as a scientist and his love for teaching, creating opportunities for students to experience the excitement of scientific discovery.

Where It All Began

It started with a deck of cards.

In 2016, while tutoring school students in chemistry, biology, and mathematics, I began experimenting with ways to make difficult scientific concepts easier to understand.

My first creation was a Rummy-inspired card game that challenged students to form chemical compounds by combining ions. What started as a simple teaching experiment sparked a bigger question: Could games help students understand science, rather than simply memorise it?

I continued exploring this idea, designing a Monopoly-inspired game about cellular metabolism and later an UNO-inspired game to explain how genetic information flows from DNA to proteins.

During my time at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad, I had the opportunity to bring these games into science outreach activities. Seeing students engage with complex biological ideas through play convinced me that learning science could be a very different experience.

Over the years, my work as a researcher added another dimension to this idea. Science, after all, is not just about knowing facts. It is about asking questions, examining evidence, and making discoveries.

BioChemLabs grew from the desire to bring that experience of scientific discovery into the classroom.

What began with a simple card game has become a mission to help students think like scientists and see the world differently.
